I love Walmart and I am not embarrassed to admit it. It wasn’t always the case but I do now. From time to time I will review new products that I bought in Walmart. This time it’s Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie ice cream. Let’s dish!
In our local supermarkets Little Debbie snacks are generally less expensive than Hostess and Drake’s snack cakes, and often have their own standalone display rack. Dessert snobs will say things like “you get what you pay for” and turn up their noses at Little Debbie’s affordable confections. All I can do is shake my head . . .
Little Debbie is one of a number of child entrepreneurs like Buster Brown and Baby Watson who displayed a knack for business at a young age, and found her niche in cookies, cupcakes and fruit pies. She wears a flattering hat and resembles Shirley Temple. I haven’t read anything about her as a boss.
Oatmeal Creme Pies are not really pies at all, at least not in the way that regular folk who eat a lot of pie think about “pie.” I am a person who spends a lot of time thinking about baked goods and planning dessert runs, so I know a pie when I see one much like Agent K in Men In Black. Interestingly, the term “pie” is also used to describe moon pies, scooter pies and whoopie pies, so this misnaming has a long history.
Oatmeal Creme Pies consists of two softbaked oatmeal cookies with a layer of mild, tasty creme sandwiched in between them. I was thunderstruck when I saw them mixed in with vanilla ice cream in Walmart’s freezer case. Could this be a winning combination? Despite the skepticism of my family, I bought a pint and I have to say . . . YES! This is a winner!
The ice cream is creamy and delicious and the bits of oatmeal cookie are tasty. The amount of oatmeal cookie compliments the ice cream without becoming obtrusive. I like the price a lot! “Gourmet” ice cream can be very expensive and this treat is a real bargain, comparatively speaking.
To see if my taste buds were reporting accurate information, I decided to do a taste test in which I took two tablespoons of a very good gourmet vanilla and asked Miss Jane to compare it with the flavor and texture of Little Debbie’s latest. The result? She prefers her expensive brand. Don’t listen to her. She thinks Ghirardelli brownies are too chocolatey. Hah!
Give this ice cream a fair try and I think you’ll enjoy it!
